What Jewelry to Wear as a Wedding Guest

The one unwritten rule: nothing that competes with the couple. Beyond that, the dress and the venue decide everything.

By dress code

  • Daytime / garden: gold studs or small hoops, one delicate pendant, minimal rings.
  • Cocktail: one statement — either drop earrings or a bold necklace, never both.
  • Black tie: chandelier earrings with an updo, or a sparkling bracelet with sleeves.
  • Beach: lightweight and corrosion-resistant. Leave soft stones and plated pieces at the hotel.

Match the neckline, not the dress colour

Strapless calls for a necklace; a high neckline calls for earrings only; a halter calls for nothing above the shoulders at all. Metal tone should follow your dress's undertone — warm gold for cream, ivory and earth tones, silver for cool blues, greys and black.
