If earrings sting after a few hours or a ring leaves a green mark, the culprit is almost always nickel — a cheap alloy metal that a large share of people react to.
Materials that are safe
- Titanium and niobium — the safest options, used for fresh piercings.
- Surgical stainless steel (316L) — very low nickel release.
- Solid 14k or 18k gold — higher karat means fewer alloys.
- Platinum — inert and excellent, but expensive.
What causes the green mark
The green is copper reacting with sweat. It is harmless and washes off, but it signals that the plating has worn through to the base metal.
Saving pieces you already own
Coat the inside of rings and the posts of earrings with clear jewelry sealant or even clear nail polish. Reapply every few weeks. Keep the pieces dry, and swap to titanium posts on earrings you wear daily.
